Feminist Media Coverage of the Social Forums

Here is a summary:

Alternative’ events focusing on globalisation, such as the European and World Social Forums, and the World Summits on the Information Society generally ignore issues related to women’s rights. This article describes the experience of a team of women - some professional journalists, and others who had never written for publication - which created its own media in order to provide a feminist perspective on several of these events. In so doing, the team aimed to influence the discussion and debate at these events, as well as providing women’s and feminist organisations with a source of information about the global issues under discussion.

Forum social québécois - 23-26 août 2007

Plus de 5000 personnes, dont le tiers provenant de l’extérieur de Montréal, ont participé au tout premier Forum social québécois qui a eu lieu à l’UQAM du 23 au 26 août. Il s’agissait du plus gros rassemblement de la gauche dans l’histoire du Québec. Ainsi, les mouvements communautaires, syndicaux, féministes, écologistes, étudiants, LGBT, autochtones et autres militantEs de tous les horizons ont travaillé à affirmer leur solidarité et leur volonté de poursuivre des actions en commun. L’événement s’est terminé par une marche manifestive de 2000 personnes dans les rues de Montréal.

23-26 août 2007 : Forum Social Québec

Le FSQ s’inscrit dans un contexte de restructuration des rapports sociaux, économiques et politiques au Québec, en fonction de l’implacable logique néolibérale, et des intérêts des mieux nantis-es de notre monde. Ceci, au détriment des travailleurs et travailleuses, des femmes, de l’environnement, des étudiants-es, des communautés autochtones, des marginalisés-es et des générations futures.

Climate Change: When Fiction Becomes Reality

The classic speculative fiction story, "The Long Rain" by Ray Bradbury, tells the story of astronauts who visit the planet Venus, where it is always raining and a few special domes provide a place for people to rest and recover. The crew members desperately travel from one shelter to another to find that they have all been completely destroyed and no longer provide protection.
